Risky Teen Sex Shocks Trya Banks |

Former Victoria Secret model and current talk show host, Tyra Banks, is apparently quite shocked by the results of a teenage girl sexuality survey she conducted last summer. One would think that someone in Tyra’s shoes would have an inkling that sex has made it all the way down to the middle school bathrooms and closets. Basically the girls were fairly irresponsible. Get this: · 52% of the survey respondents say they don’t use protection during sex · One in three says she fears already having a sexually transmitted disease · 24% infected with STD’s still have unprotected sex · One in five girls says she WANTS to be a teen mom With the results in, Tyra invited some of the respondents to her show. One girl said that a lot of the guys she was with would get mad if she had used protection. This same girl has contracted Chlamydia twice, and now as genital herpes (a life-long, incurable virus). Another girl who is living with Herpes says she’s never addressed the issue with the boy who gave it to her. This always leads the adult world to demand more time for comprehensive sex education. Let’s tell these kids where to get condoms and how to use them. Yet do they really care? Abstinence education programs tell kids something else: you’re worth waiting for. You have value and you don’t have to give yourself away. You can be 100% healthy and even have the added bonus of a greater opportunity for a successful, long-term relationship when you’re actually ready for it. When thinking about statistics, let us also remember that more than half of high school age students do not have sex. Maybe the abstinence message makes more sense.

SEXY TV = HIGHER TEEN PREGNANCIES |
|

A recently released study by the Rand Corporation has linked increased teen pregnancy rates to higher sexual content in television shows. Can we say, “duh”? Much of the TV story lines highlight only positive aspects of sex without any downside. Couples meet have sex and move on. Ever heard that 1 in 2 sexually active Americans has HPV? Hollywood hasn’t. The TV shows portray little or no problems with frequent sex and short-term relationships. So if we expect teens to think through their decisions, perhaps having something grounded in reality might help. Anyone care to develop a reality show based on the following characters: Pregnant teen girl in high school determined to raise her child. Herpes infected boy dealing with an ugly looking outbreak—having to expose himself (literally) in PE class Family torn apart by defiant youth who knows it all, and then needs their support to cope with a string of broken relationships, as she gets older Feel free to add to the plot line. Reality stinks when it comes to the consequences of bad choices. |

This is a reflection from someone who knows what it means to be in a relationship and also choose not to have sex. Take heart. It is possible to enjoy closeness, friendship, and a long-term romance, without complicating life with sex. Saving sex for marriage makes sense.~Karen Just wanted to let you know you have a great site here. For all those who think that waiting for marriage is pointless and not rewarding - think again! My boyfriend and I have been together for four years (he is eighteen, I am nearly eighteen) and we are both proud virgins. We've taken things very slowly and I'm happy to say we have a wonderful relationship, and we have talked frankly about our decision to save ourselves for marriage. It's not an easy or normal route to take, but teens out there should know that it's definitely possible!
Thanks again for an interesting, informative website, D.L. |

Desperate Housewives Teaches Our Kids About Sex |
|

With television ranking the highest activity for non-school waking time for youth –it’s no wonder that the old adage “garbage in, garbage out” could not be more true. While adults wring their hands about teen pregnancy and the influence of TV, we now have even more evidence that our culture’s children are entertained with television programming not intended for them. Desperate Housewives is now the most popular broadcast TV show among kids aged 9-12. Do you think kids this age really understand relationships better from this kind of entertainment? We don’t need to wonder why TV influences teen pregnancy; we need to wonder why our children are allowed to watch. |
